Comparison of Operating Systems

When it comes to computer operating systems, you are spoilt for choices. There are so many in the market that you feel in a fix choosing the best among them. Take a glance at the top three operating systems.

Best 3 Operating Systems

There is always a debate going on about the best operating system software. Numerous studies and also popular opinion have tilted in favor of these computer operating systems. Here are three of the top OS for computers.

1. Windows 7

The Microsoft Windows is the winning baby of the Microsoft Corporation. The OS boasts of some great features that have always seen it on tops. It is the largest OS used across in the world. As of October 2009, Windows occupied about 91% of the OS market. The latest version of the software, Windows 7 comes with a number of great features:

It uses less memory

Faster than most OS software

Has a vast library of applications and programs

Faster boot performance

Support for many file formats

Touch screen support

The software also has some downsides:

It is prone to virus attacks. The Windows OS has the greatest market share. Naturally, most malwares and viruses are targeted to this software.

Needs regular maintenance for smooth performance.

A licensed version of the software is a bit expensive for average users.

The Windows OS is preferred by home users as well as big business organizations. It is also very popular with gamers. The software offers great game and multimedia support.

2. Mac OS X

The Mac OS is the second most popular operating system. It is reliable and is being increasingly used by students, researchers and designers.

3. Linux 2.6.35.7

It is one of the most popular OS softwares right now. The year 2010 has seen the release of several versions of the Linux OS. The latest stable version is Linux 2.6.35.7. It is generally free.

The software is renowned for:

Low virus and malware rate

Low requirements

Easily customizable

Can run a number of Windows programs

The disadvantages of the software are:

Users need some extra knowledge to operate this software. Mac and Windows OS can be used and managed very easily.

Most commercial programs do not offer support to this OS.

Experienced users as well as small business firms looking for a free OS are the greatest Linux users.

Comparison of Top 3 Operating Systems

All that talk of the OS features leads to only one question. Who is the best of them all? As you know, declaring a clear winner is very difficult. There have been many debates and discussions on the issue. Each of the operating systems has its advantages and disadvantages. The Windows OS has an edge over others in its popularity and hardware support. The Mac OS X is preferred for its simplicity and high performance. The strength of Linux OS lies in its free availability and low virus threat. Each OS also has its own niche. So the choice of the software ultimately depends on the kind of user you are. The OS you choose is ultimately the reflection of your personal needs and preference.

Earlier this summer HP also bought the smart manufacturer for $1.2 billion.

Speaking on these developments and some more issues in relation to HP, Executive Vice President for the Personal Systems Group, Todd Bradley mentioned that the group under him was in-charge of a $40-plus billion revenue stream which includes PCs, printers & more. He said this particular group was behind the buying up of palm some months back. According to him the most important goal which lies next to him is deploying the WebOS, mobile operating system on the Palm phones.

As per their planning they have thought of selling around 15 million printer using WebOS. He also mentions that with the increase in the smartphone category the market for tablets is also growing each day. As per his estimates the in the next few years tablets could comprise of $40 billion market. He also mentioned that smartphone market would also be touching the $100billion market. Ofcourse HP is on the lookout to be a part of this huge market with its own iPad competitors.

Bradley mentioned that the main reason for acquiring Pal was for the WebOS which according to him is not just for the OS but also to build a consistent interface from phones to tablets. Adding further he said that they dint have any plan Bradley adds however, that Palm will not license iOS, as Google has with the Android platform.

Further he mentioned that the company had nothing in mind to adopt Apple’s or Dell’s strategy in the process of implementing the iOS platform. With the close of the massive 3PAR acquisition he mentioned that the 3PAR’s data storage offering would serve great to HP in terms of innovating in this arena.

Computer and Brain

While working on a computer model intended to study how the brain deals with certain kinds of visual information, the researchers at Tomaso Poggio’s lab at MIT were amazed to see that the computer model which was not even developed for this purpose, was able to interpret as good as a human brain and at certain instances could do more rapidly than many existing computer systems specially designed for this purpose.

They were using the model computer to study a series of photographs. It was supposed to give a theoretical analysis of how the brain interprets these pictures and how the various pathways work in a brain.

This gave a turning point not only to the research but brought a complete change in the approach. There were running two independent lines of research at Tomaso Poggio’s lab at MIT. On the one hand, the researchers were working to understand how the brain works using advanced computer models. On the other hand, another research was focused on improving the abilities of computer to perform complex tasks like interpreting images as easily as a brain. However later when they found that the two tasks have been overlapping each other, they decided to combine them.

He said that for the first time, he has found a computer model reproducing such a remarkable interpretation on such kind of task. This has added a new angle to the existing viewpoint. Poggio says,” It meant that we may be closer to understanding how the visual cortex recognizes objects and scenes than I ever thought possible.”

The study was conducted to know how the visual cortex works in a brain. Visual cortex is a large part of a brain and one of the most complicated systems. So understanding it could be a major leap towards understanding the functioning of a brain. In order to do this, a series of experiments were done which involved certain tasks which were very hard for a computer model to perform however the researchers were surprised at the results.

The computer vision of the system was able to respond intelligently to a series of photographs. These photographs contained pictures of different animals in different backgrounds. Photographs were shown to people only for a fraction of a second. This task involved the use of a particular part of the human visual cortex, known as the Ventral 1 pathway.

Poggio says that with these results new insights into cortex which is the key problem could be seen. In spite of these amazing results, they are still not able to understand how this model works. The researchers are now working on finding out the reasons which could account for these results and other recent results from the lab.

“Our visual abilities are computationally amazing, and we are still far from imitating them with computers,” Poggio says. This study encourages paying close attention to the latest developments in neuroscience.

Next 50 years will be witnessing almost 32 times more technological progress compared to the progress made during the whole 20th century, according to a futurological vision advanced by Ray Kurzweil, an eminent computer expert from America. It is all about the speed of technological advancements. Current pace of technological progress is extremely high and it will reach at the higher levels with tremendous speed soon.

One of the most important features that would be characterizing these technological advancements in next twenty years should be the development of computers which will be almost at par with the human brains and human intelligence. “One of such outcomes may be artificial intelligence matching human intellect the 2020s”, Ray Kurzweil says.

Ray is quite hopeful that machines of next generation will be replacing or supporting the human brains and intelligence capabilities. This would start an all new era of providing machine based solutions to many of the most puzzled and complex, intricate problems of this century that are still unsolved.

Ray Kurzweil in an attempt to conceptualize and index the technological challenges before the humanity feels that the machines will soon be able to learn communicating, teaching, and replicating on their own.

Ray’s predictions are mainly based upon mathematical calculations performed with the rate of advancements in computer chips which gets doubled up in its power and other features like memory capacity in a period of every two years. This rate is almost same for the past 50 years or so.

This is a paradigm shift and the rate of shift also gets double up every ten years. On the basis of this rate of shift, it is easy to understand that the next 50 years or the half century will be witnessing 32 times more technological advancements compared to the rate of such progress during the previous half century.

Almost every aspect of science and technology and many other sectors are undergoing tremendous changes and progressive transformations at extremely fast pace. Areas like computation, molecular biology, and communication technology are experiencing new heights. At the same time advanced researches in the fields of DNA sequencing, brain imaging, and other human knowledge and brain power related aspects are also getting revolutionized. Networking has become a core concept today and there are advancements in price-performance, bandwidth along with the capacity enhancements which have almost doubled up by now.

Computers of today are dependent on 2-dimensional silicon chip technology. Scientists have been successful in developing advanced techniques that will be helpful in designing the 3-dimensional chips enhancing the performance levels. A new concept has also been developed which is based on making these 3-dimensional chips from the biological molecules. With this innovation, it will be possible to miniaturize more metal based computer chips in near future.

Three dimensional molecular computing will be the next generation of computer concepts. It will also help in making hardware that will substantiate the’ artificial intelligence’ to be at par with human intelligence.

Reverse engineering of human brain will then enable designing of new software that will be having almost human brain like capacities. Scientists have discovered and identified almost twelve human brain regions and have developed simulation models for them.
Ray Kurtweil is hopeful of having a computer based non-biological “post-human” world, “where a second intelligent entity would exist alongside people”, he says.

Dell launched an Internet-based’ storage area network array’ on Monday. Subsequent to the acquisition of ‘EqualLogic’, the computer manufacturer, it is the first introduction by Dell.

Dell’s ‘PS5000 Series iSCSI array’ is aiming at the medium businesses that are running their own servers in a specialized and virtualized environment within the ambit of a data center. This new rolled out array from Dell has been designed with an objective to provide enhanced storage in specified environments.

The “PS5000” is now available in three different models. These models are well equipped with the modular architecture developed by the “EqualLogic”. It will further facilitate the customers with the hardware supporting more storage capacity.

This array is based upon the virtualization concept and provides a simple slicing and dicing the disk arrays in varied applications that are running on virtualized servers.

The” PS5000” Series is a typical 16-bays chassis. Each bay is capable of holding a specific’1 TB drive’ for a complete set of ‘16 TB’ of storage. This is a flexible system that can easily be scaled up to ‘192 TB’ storage. It is extremely beneficial for the specific business systems with enhanced storage capacities “with as many as 60,000 high-transaction users”, according to Dell.

Dell has given this array a new name, the “intelligent storage array”. It is mainly because of the inclusion of ‘SAN configuration’ features along with the capabilities for sensing the “network topology that automatically builds RAID sets, and conducts system health checks”, Dell said. The company claims that the installation and configuration of this new ‘PS5000’ system will not consume more than an hour’s time.

Three models of the ‘PS5000’ series have different speeds of the disk drives. The ‘PS5000E’, the cheapest one, uses the SATA hard disk drives. The ‘PS5000X’ model is based on the 10,000-RPM SAS hot-plugged drives, and the ‘PS5000XV’ model uses the 15,000-RPM SAS drives. The ‘PS5000’ series has a common price tag of $ 19,000.

This new acquired technology of Dell is serving the various types of storage technology related purposes of the small and medium businesses. Experts call this as the “Dell’s sweet spot in storage”.

SANs have been traditionally designed around the “Fiber Channel” which was almost unaffordable for the small businesses specifically. But this new product of Dell, which is based on the “iSCSI SANs”, uses the internet protocols and therefore becomes affordable, manageable, and maintainable for all small and medium businesses. Market analysts expect that the double digit growth of this technology will reach up to $5.1 billion level around 2010.

This technologically advanced recycling process of HP involves a combination of multiple sources and grades of old plastic. The source of plastic includes generally used water bottles and the old ink-jet cartridges. Counting after its first phase of test production of the ink cartridges, the company has been successful in recycling enough plastic to fill more than 200 tractor-trailers.

Hp is much optimistic with its new technology and its environmental benefits. The technology has a focus on green concerning issues with its use of recycled plastics in producing original HP ink-jet print cartridges. “We have the opportunity to reduce the environmental impact HP products have on the planet” said Michael Hoffmann, the Senior Vice President of HP’s supplies, imaging, and printing group.

According to HP, the recycled content in the new ink-jet cartridges amounts in a range of 70% to 100% of the total plastic used. This achievement of total plastic use would definitely make the company an eligible candidate for the award from the ‘Society of Plastics Engineers’, says the company sources. It is believed that the society would be presenting with the award to the company at the Global Plastics Environmental Conference in March.

This most recent technological advancement has helped Hp in addressing to its concern for the environment. It is in fact a part of HP’s ‘Design for Environment ‘program, that aims to reduce the environmental damage caused by HP ink – cartridges. The company is currently running its coveted ‘Planet Partner Program (PPP)’ in more than 45 countries, regions, and territories across the globe. This unique program involves returning and recycling of ink-cartridges.

Industry experts believe that the ‘Recycling’ of the electronics and other parts is one of the real complex processes. The technology developed is yet incomplete and needs further evolution.’ Wal-Mart’ with almost same objectives also intends to use only renewable energy and creating zero waste in near future. In this targeted efforts, the retailer is gathering scores on suppliers’ environmental efforts to make decisions about placing the products on respective shelves.

Problems of the ‘wall-mart’ and HP are almost the same in this respect. Keeping a track of all electronic items, their parts, and their separation with the suppliers cropped up as a major issue. It is mainly because that the number of suppliers is huge. Apart from this, there are no uniform guidelines that the companies can deliver to their suppliers.

This model is also capable of supporting other open source applications.

HP’s thin-client hardware uses a dedicated ‘Neoware Technology’ that facilitates users to build exclusive controllable desktop systems. These systems could easily be managed centrally from servers with little desk-side intervention. Neoware’s Linux-based thin-client systems complemented HP’s Windows-based systems.

The ‘6720t mobile PC’ has a 15.4-inch display and is powered by a 1.06-GHz Intel Celeron M Processor 423. The system effectively supports Wi-Fi and also contains a PC memory card slot for connecting to 3G broadband wireless networks.

HP’s new products are beneficial to the people who have more out timing jobs including the insurance claim processors, warehouse and inventory managers, and office administrators. HP says that these machines are easier to manage with enhanced security compared to the conventional computers.

‘HP Virtual Desktop Infrastructure’ is based on the VMware’s Infrastructure. It helps managing multiple VMware Server and VMware ESX Server virtual machines. HP has also included its management software, the ‘Consolidated Client Infrastructure’, which centralizes PC processing operations in the data center. The company also added the ‘HP Systems Insight Manager’ to systemize the storage management.

HP’s new ‘6720t mobile PC’ would be ready for shipping by the month end with a price tag of $725. Compaq Presario C700T’ notebook has been priced at $500. HP however, did not disclose the technical specifications of the new ‘Compaq t5730 and t5735 desktops’. These models would be having price tags of $499 and $450, respectively. Currently, HP is offering an older Compaq t5530 thin client for $300.
