With the issuance of its guidelines for the Beijing Olympics, the international Olympic Committee (IOC) permitted athletes and other participants for blogging for the first time during this event.
There was a long lasting demand from the corners of athletes and many sportspersons around the world. They wanted to be allowed for writing on their blogs even during the game-days of the Olympics. The arguments that were submitted in the favor of blog writing were basically centered on the fact that blogs are just online journals of personal thoughts and views and they are not meant for any commercial purposes or any other political purposes in it as far as the athletes are concerned.
These blogs are means of concurrent and constant touch with millions of fans for these athletes. IOC was mainly worried about the copyrights and privacy issues related with any type of online publications.
IOC in its guidelines made this very clear that the permission will be specific to the duration of Beijing Olympic Games and athletes will have to follow the prescribed writing format and other instructions while writing posts on their blogs. This permission is limited to the extent that the blog is purely personal in its approach and in no way it is a reflection of any type of journalism.
During the period of the Olympic events the athletes would be required to limit their writings specifically to the game events and their personal experiences about it. No other information which may be classified as the confidential one can be posted on such blogs.
At the same time, there will be a complete embargo on posting any game audio and video material on these blogs also. However, still pictures and other images can be posted on the blogs by athletes and other permitted officials. The pictures must have been taken outside the accredited areas and should not contain any sports action, according to the guidelines of IOC.
IOC is keeping a full watch on the interests of the broadcasters and other sponsors which will cost in billions. Blogs would also be required to have no commercial agreements with any company and there should not ne any such reference on it either.” Blogs should also adhere to the Olympic spirit and be dignified and in good taste”, says IOC.
